  • Job Title: Head of Upper School
  • Reports To: Head of SchoolJOB SUMMARY.The head of upper school serves as the lead administrator for the upper school division (grades 9-12) and provides strategic, spiritual, academic, and operational leadership aligned with the school's mission and values. Reporting to the head of school, this role ensures a Christ-centered, college-preparatory learning environment that fosters academic excellence, character development, and spiritual growth.PROFESSIONAL QUALITIES
    • A record of success in teaching and administration, preferably at Christian independent schools
    • An educational philosophy consistent with the mission and passion of Second Baptist School
    • A demonstrated discernment and competence in effective recruiting and hiring, delegation of responsibilities, and supervision of administrative and instructional staff
    • Experience in academic leadership, curriculum development and varied pedagogical techniques
    • Business acumen with regard to school finance and budget
    • Exceptional communication and relational skillsPRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES.Essential job functions may include, but are not limited to, the following:Curriculum and Instruction
      • Implement the head of school's vision for the upper school.
      • Ensure the upper school curriculum and instructional practices are aligned with and advance the SBS mission and portrait of a graduate.
      • Serve as the academic leader of the upper school including strategic projects such as Understanding by Design curricular work and the Schools of Distinction.
      • Observe and evaluate upper school faculty in their development and implementation of curriculum and classroom instruction.
      • Review, evaluate, and choose curriculum and textbooks in partnership with upper school administration and department heads.
      • Possess a passion for and experience with integrating technology into curriculum.
      • Work with the curriculum team in providing professional development for upper school faculty and staff.Personnel
        • Lead the upper school administrative team.
        • Lead the hiring process for upper school faculty and administrators.
        • Lead the year-long onboarding process for new faculty.
        • Evaluate faculty and staff annually.Student Experience
          • Work with the dean of students to maintain policies, expectations, and programming for student behavior and character growth.
          • Work with the dean of students regarding student management issues of a serious nature (suspensions, dismissals, etc.).
          • Lead student leadership programming for the SBS Prefects and Fellows programs.
          • Collaborate with Second Baptist Church and students to plan chapel programming.
          • Collaborate with the director of athletics, director of arts, and director of student impact on providing an excellent experience that advances the SBS Portrait of a Graduate.Administrative
            • Promote a culture that reflects the school's mission and values.
            • Maintain a visible presence in all areas of the school.
            • Keep the head of school informed of the general programs, activities and concerning issues in the upper school.
            • Oversee the upper school budget.
            • Serve as a contributing and active member of the executive team, Woodway leadership, academic, administrative, and threat assessment teams.
            • Conduct regular meetings with upper school faculty to reinforce vision, ensure clear communication and operations, and create a place for the exchange of ideas on educational matters.
            • Work with the admissions office to effectively communicate the school's strengths and characteristics to prospective families and evaluation of applicants.
            • Provide administrative supervision at athletic events, dances and other extracurricular events.KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES REQUIRED.To perform this job successfully, candidates must:
              • Have advanced interpersonal communication skills to work effectively with the school community.
              • Be an adept critical thinker with developed analytical skills, advanced organizational skills, and a proven track record of time management and multitasking abilities.
              • Possess exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
              • Be able to appreciate, understand and assimilate the Second Baptist School mission, vision, core values.
              • Be able to thrive in a fast-paced environment, adept at shifting gears quickly to meet the needs of varying situations or changing priorities.
              • Pay attention to detail and have excellent follow-through to complete tasks.
              • Have strong leadership skills (i.e. be an independent and motivated teammate who builds trust, motivates team members, holds self and others accountable, and gives feedback) that guide actions and support others in achieving goals.CANDIDATE SUMMARY.We seek the following in qualified candidates:
                • A master's, or higher, degree from an accredited institution.
                • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
                • Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office, Google Suite, and Apple devices.
